How Adult Toys Are Made: From Prototype to Finished Product

If you've browsed RealTouch Lab, you've noticed every product has a Stage number. A common assumption is that higher Stage means larger size. That's not how it works.

The Stage system maps directly to our manufacturing process — each Stage represents a distinct step in how a product is made, from the very first 3D-printed prototype to the final premium finish. Here's what each one actually means.

Stage 01 — The Resin Prototype

Every product starts here. Stage 01 pieces are hyper-realistic photopolymer resin prototypes, created using precision 3D printing and electroforming techniques. These are the original design models — the physical embodiment of the concept before any silicone is involved.

Stage 01 pieces are not finished products. They are raw, uncoated, and exist solely as the design master. We make them available as collector's items for those who want to own a piece of the process from the very beginning.

Stage 02 — The Metal Master Mold

Once the resin prototype is approved, it becomes the basis for a ultra-detailed metal master mold. This is the negative mold used to cast every silicone product that follows. The precision of this mold determines the quality of every Stage 03, 04, and 05 product made from it.

Stage 02 pieces are manufacturing tools elevated to collectible objects. The level of detail captured in metal at this stage is what makes the final silicone products so anatomically accurate.

Stage 03 — First Finished Silicone: Natural Form

Stage 03 is where the product becomes something you can actually use. These are cast directly from the Stage 02 metal mold using platinum-cured dual-density silicone — a firm inner core that simulates realistic resistance, surrounded by a soft outer layer (Shore 00-30) that mimics the give of real skin.

Stage 03 products are presented in natural silicone color — unpainted, honest, and focused entirely on material quality and tactile realism. The texture, the raised veins, the surface detail — all of it comes directly from the mold. No paint, no coating. Just the silicone in its purest finished form.

For buyers who prioritize feel over visual realism, Stage 03 is often the preferred choice.

Stage 04 — Hand-Painted Ultra-Realistic Finish

Stage 04 takes the same dual-density silicone construction as Stage 03 and adds a layer of multi-layered hand-painting. Each piece is painted by hand to depict lifelike capillaries, subtle skin blemishes, visible vein outlines, and seamless color gradients.

This is where the product crosses from realistic to uncanny. The visual detail at Stage 04 is designed to be indistinguishable from the real thing at close range. No two pieces are identical — the hand-painting process means each one carries its own subtle variation.

Stage 04 is for buyers who want both tactile and visual realism, without compromise.

Stage 05 — Hand-Painted + Velvet Shield Coating

Stage 05 is the complete product. It combines everything from Stage 04 — the dual-density silicone, the hand-painted ultra-realistic finish — with one additional exclusive treatment: Velvet Shield Coating.

Velvet Shield is not a spray, not a lubricant, and not a temporary surface treatment. It's a permanent molecular-level transformation of the silicone surface that eliminates three of the most common complaints about silicone toys:

  • Oiliness — the surface stays dry and clean to the touch
  • Tackiness — no more lint, dust, or debris sticking to the surface
  • Drag — the surface feels fundamentally different, smoother in a way that silicone alone cannot achieve

Once applied, Velvet Shield is permanent. It doesn't wash off, wear off, or degrade with normal use and cleaning. It's exclusive to Stage 05 and represents the final step in our manufacturing process.

Why We Show You the Whole Process

Most brands show you the finished product and nothing else. We show you every stage because we believe the process is part of what you're buying.

When you purchase a Stage 05 product, you're not just buying a silicone toy. You're buying the result of a process that started with a 3D-printed resin prototype, was refined into a precision metal mold, cast in platinum-cured dual-density silicone, painted by hand, and finished with a permanent surface treatment that no other brand offers.

The Stage number tells you exactly where your product sits in that journey.
