Raw vs Hand-Painted vs Velvet Shield: Which Finish Should You Buy?

Raw vs Hand-Painted vs Velvet Shield: Which Finish Should You Buy?

Three finishes. Same sculpt. Very different experiences. Here's how to choose.

Every RealTouch Lab model is available in three finishes: Raw Pure Silicone, Artisan Hand-Painted, and Velvet Shield™ Elite. They share the same mold, the same platinum-cured dual-density silicone, and the same anatomical detail. What changes is the surface.

This guide breaks down what each finish gives you, and who each one is for.

Raw Pure Silicone — $48

The foundation. Cast directly from our precision metal master mold in platinum-cured dual-density silicone, and left in its natural, unpainted state.

What you get:

  • Full dual-density construction — soft Shore 00-30 outer layer, firm inner core
  • Complete surface detail: raised veins, skin texture, anatomical contours
  • Natural silicone color, no pigment applied to the surface
  • 100% body-safe, non-porous, fully sterilizable

What you don't get: Visual realism. It feels real, but it doesn't look real — it looks like exactly what it is, a beautifully cast piece of silicone.

Best for: Buyers who care about feel over appearance, first-time buyers testing a size before committing, and anyone who prefers a discreet, neutral look.

Trade-off to know: Uncoated silicone has a naturally slightly tacky surface that attracts dust and lint. Cornstarch powder manages it, but you'll be reapplying after every wash.

Artisan Hand-Painted — $69

The same silicone body, finished with six layers of hand-applied, body-safe pigment.

What you get:

  • Everything in Raw Pure Silicone
  • Six-layer hand-painting: base color blocks, gradients, two vein passes, capillaries, and skin blemish detail
  • Visual realism that photographs and reads as genuinely lifelike at close range
  • Natural variation — no two pieces are identical, because every one is painted by hand

What you don't get: A treated surface. The painting is sealed and durable, but the underlying silicone still has the same tackiness characteristics as Raw.

Best for: Buyers who want both tactile and visual realism, and who don't mind a powder routine as part of care.

Velvet Shield™ Elite — $89

The complete product. Hand-painted, then finished with our proprietary Velvet Shield Coating.

What you get:

  • Everything in Artisan Hand-Painted
  • Velvet Shield Coating — a permanent, molecular-level surface treatment measured in microns
  • Zero tackiness, permanently. No plasticizer migration, no oily film
  • No lint or dust attraction — the surface stays clean between uses
  • No powder, ever. Wash, dry, store. That's the whole routine
  • Boil-safe and fully sterilization-compatible
  • PFAS-free and body-safe for prolonged skin contact

What you don't get: A lower price. This is the most involved finish we make, and it costs the most.

Best for: Buyers who want the product to stay exactly as it arrived, indefinitely, with no maintenance ritual. If you've owned silicone toys before and been frustrated by the stickiness, this is the finish that solves it.

How to Decide

Buy Raw if you're price-sensitive, testing a size, or simply don't care how it looks.

Buy Hand-Painted if visual realism matters to you and you're comfortable with standard silicone care.

Buy Velvet Shield Elite if you want the finished article with no compromises, and you never want to think about powder again.

One thing worth saying plainly: the higher price isn't about a better sculpt. All three come from the same mold and feel the same in the hand. You're paying for surface — how it looks, and how it behaves over the years you own it.
